Culinary Club Breakfast
By: Sadie Appel
The Culinary Club hosted a breakfast meeting this past Friday, April 24th. The members all split up and worked together in small groups to make 2 different kinds of muffins: raspberry streusel and blueberry. Because many of them are involved in sports or other after school activities, it has been difficult to find a time that worked for everyone; so, Chef introduced the idea of a morning meeting to make breakfast items! They met at 7am in Chef’s room and got started right away. Chef also brought in some delicious Casey’s breakfast pizza, store bought muffins (double chocolate and walnut/pistachio), apples, bananas, and oranges. For drinks, they could choose from milk or orange juice. Overall, it was a very fun way to begin the students’ Friday and to get through the rest of the year. They discussed a bit about their last meeting, which will probably fall in the last week of school, but they’re not sure what will be on the menu for that day yet.
NFL Draft Round 1 Recap
By: Garrett Jacobs
The first round of the 2026 NFL Draft happened on Thursday, April 23rd, 2026 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and it was really interesting with some expected picks and some surprising ones too.
The first pick was by the Las Vegas Raiders, and they took Heisman quarterback Fernando Mendoza out of Indiana. The New York Jets had the second pick and they edge rusher David Bailey out of Texas Tech.
One of the biggest surprises was when the Arizona Cardinals picked running back Jeremiyah Love from Notre Dame at number three. Usually, running backs don’t get picked that high anymore, so a lot of people were shocked by that decision.
After that, the Tennessee Titans picked wide receiver Carnell Tate from Ohio State, which gives their offense another good weapon. Then the New York Giants picked linebacker Arvell Reese from Ohio State, adding a strong defensive player.
Throughout the rest of the first round, a lot of teams focused on defense. Players like Caleb Downs and Sonny Styles were picked, showing that teams really wanted fast and athletic defenders.
Another surprising moment was when the Los Angeles Rams picked quarterback Ty Simpson from Alabama.
There were also a lot of trades during the first round. Some teams moved up to get players they really wanted, while others, like the Buffalo Bills, traded back to get more picks later instead of picking in the first round.
Overall, the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft had a mix of smart picks, risky decisions, and big trades. Rounds 2 and 3 of the draft start on Friday April 24th, 2026 with rounds 4-7 following on Saturday April 25th, 2026 on ABC and ESPN.
Singer D4vd Investigated for the Murder of Celeste Rivas Hernandez
By: James Morse
7 months after 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez's dismembered body was discovered in the trunk of a car registered to the 21-year-old singer, D4vd, whose legal name is David Anthony Burke, was arrested under suspicion of murder on April 16, 2026.
Burke's mugshot, released on April 20, 2026. Obtained from the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office
The victim, Celeste Rivas Hernandez, is noted to have been present in the singer’s Discord server in 2022, likely where he began to groom her. At the time she would have been around 12-13 years old. Hernandez was reported missing on April 5, 2024. Her brother claimed to have seen her leave with Burke. Evidence suggests the two lived in a rental home for about a year where he is believed to have sexually abused her before she was killed on or around April 23, 2025. Burke then allegedly dismembered her body and placed it in his car.
Since his arrest, new allegations have arisen from the investigation. Charged with sexual abuse of a child, prosecutors believe that Hernandez was killed after threatening to go public with his "criminal conduct". The autopsy report suggests that she was killed by stabbing. Burke’s phone was confiscated for the investigation as well, and a significant amount of child sex abuse material was found on his iCloud account.
Burke has pleaded not guilty to all charges, including first degree murder, lewd and lascivious acts, and mutilation of a corpse. Beyond the years behind bars that he is facing, Burke is also facing the death penalty, a rarity in the California court of law. Only time will tell whether he will face a life behind bars or if his life will come to an end.
The Gilgo Beach Killer
By: Bailee Ward
A 23 year-old sex worker had gone missing in May of 2010 after visiting a client in Oak Beach, Long Island, New York which was a community near Gilgo. And it all started with Shannan Gilbert. In the early morning of May 1st 2010, Shannan was advertised as a sex worker on Craigslist and had been driven to a home in Oak Beach to meet with a client according to Suffolk County Police. Gilbert had been repeatedly calling 911 and saying “There is someone after me.” in an audio that was released in 2022. She
had fled the home and had asked for help from multiple different neighbors, who had then also called 911, and then had gone into a nearby marsh, according to the police. Fast forward to December 2011 her skeletonized remains were found in the marsh halfway entangled in overgrown shrubbery. The medical examiner listed that her cause of death was undetermined. But an independent autopsy was performed and the Chief medical examiner Micheal Baden concluded that there was “ insufficient information to determine a definite cause of death, but the autopsy findings are consistent with homicidal strangulation.” He also noted that part of her neck bone was missing from her remains. Which may have been fractured during the strangulation. The police also ruled out the driver and the client of all criminal involvement. According to Rondey Harrison “ Based on evidence, the facts, the totality of circumstances, the prevailing opinion in Shannan’s death, while tragic, was not a murder, and was most likely non-criminal.” The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office had declined to respond to Gilbert’s case. Again on June 28,1997, the dismembered torso was found in a wooden area in the state park in West Hempstead on Long Island told by Nassau County District Attorney's office. A tattoo had been found on the unidentified body of a peach and that earned her the nickname “peaches” They had swabbed the remains of the body and they detected the presence of semen. In April 2011 the search for bodies on Long Island had found the remains of a toddler off Ocean Parkway in Gilgo Beach. The investigators had also found the remains that were left of peaches. On the westbound side of the parkway in Zachs Bay the child had been determined that she was “Peaches” biological daughter. Those two had been undefined for more than a decade. In April of 2025 with the help of genetic genealogy Nassau County Officials and the FBI had announced their identities. Tanya Jackson, a 26 year-old and a US Army veteran and her 2 year- old daughter, Tatiana Dykes. Tayna was originally from Mobile, Alabama and had served in the army from 1993 to 1995 and her and her daughter were living in Brooklyn and had been estranged from their family at the time. In December the child's father, Andrew Dykes who was 66 had been arrested in Florida and charged with the murder of Tayna and Tatiana. “ Tayna Jackson was not murdered by a serial killer, but allegedly by the man she loved, and the father of her child,” said Donelley, the district attorney. He also served in the Army from 1980-2001 as a military instructor who specialized in anatomy and physiology, then worked as a Florida state trooper. After they had identified tayna and Tatiana the investigators had surveillance Andrew in Tampa, Florida. They had received a Charley’s Cheesesteak plastic cup and straw that he threw into the trash and his DNA had been matched to the one found on Tayna Jackson’s body, but there was no evidence to go forward with the murder of the child’s death. Dykes has pleaded not guilty to one count of second-degree murder and he faces up to 25 years in prison. Skeletal remains of a person that they referred to as the Asian Doe were found off Ocean parkway in April 2011. The body was an Asian biological male dressed in women's clothing. “ Because the victim was wearing exclusively women’s clothing at the time of the death, it is possible that they identified as a woman or were known by others for being a woman,” said Ray Tierney. They had believed that the victim died in 2006 and the victim was between 17- 23 and about 5’6 and was wearing a blue, ribbed short-sleeved shirt, a women's bra and pants. Investigators believe that the victim had been working as a sex-worker.
