Judy's Family Café Renovation
By: Sadie Appel
Judy’s Family Café, specifically Judy, has gone viral all over the internet with her funny videos where she finds creative ways to advertise her special pancakes. Whenever people come to the Midwest, they make sure to stop at this fun place with delicious food! In fact, at least 5,000 people who had never been to Galesburg before traveled there to see Judy last year. Recently, Judy’s has been closed due to renovation purposes, where they completely redid the outside and inside of the place. During the renovation process, you could still see Judy at her Judy’s Kitchen, several blocks away from her café. This place, however, serves lunch and dinner, while her café serves breakfast and lunch. The reopening day was May 7, where many people crowded there to see the new place and enjoy the same great food. The design was crafted by Streamline Architects of Moline and built by Estes Construction. They worked long and hard on this project, but it came together so nicely and the place is completely transformed with its new, modern-style look. The new build also has extended seating, with a nice patio for outdoor dining. If you’re ever in Galesburg or have some free time this summer, be sure to take a trip to see Judy at her new and improved café!

Possible 30 Year Old Case Solved, Suspect Might Be Found Guilty of More
By: Bailee Ward
For 30 years the answer of who killed Cindy Wanner remained a mystery, leaving her California home and her baby behind. She suddenly disappeared in 1991 in rattled residents of Granite Bay a suburb in Sacramento. A 35 year old mom of two had gone to clean her sister's home, where Cindy’s 11 month old baby was sitting buckled into the highchair crying where Cindy was nowhere to be found. A giant search was out and three weeks later her body was found in a remote area about 40 miles from her sister's home. Through the years the law enforcement was continuing testing the evidence without any sufficient evidence. There was many suspects but one in particular flew under the radar when detectives had submitted the jackpot evidence from her case. This piece of evidence had made a match to identifying James Lawhead Jr., 64 years old was taking in for questioning and was the prime suspect in this case. But investigators looking for Lawhead had found no trace of him and it said “ it appeared that he had just disappeared since 2005”. Said by Wayne Woo a Placer County Sheriff. “ We explored all possibilities on what could have happened, whether he was still living under a fake identity, whether he had left the country, or whether he was deceased.” Wayne Woo. The detectives had asked other agencies for help and the Scottsdale Police Department, while using the Arizona Department of Transportation’s facial recognition system had found a match. This system is used to flag fake driver’s licenses, state IDs and suspected identity theft. In Arizona, he wasn’t called or going by the name James Lawhead but instead was going by Vincent Reynolds and was living in Bullhead City near the states border of Nevada and 600 miles from Placer. Authorities believe that he could also be linked to other crimes as well. He was arrested on the driveway of his home on April 24 and after his arrest the investigators searched the house and had found loaded firearms, a bag with $15,000 as well as a burner phone. He is facing charges of murder and kidnapping. “This arrest is a powerful reminder that time does not erase responsibility, and it does not diminish our commitment,” Gire said in a statement following the arrest. His sister said that she hasn't seen or heard from her brother James in more than 20 years. To help figure out more cases like this the Placer County Sheriff's Office released this comment, “We encourage law enforcement agencies, specifically those across the west coast, to look at any cold cases that may have similarities to this case and reach out to our team at 530-889-7835.”

An expedition trip aboard the MV Hondius, meant to be an exclusive luxurious trip to some of the most remote areas of the world, has turned into a nightmare for the 146 passengers onboard, as hantavirus has already killed three of their shipmates and left 5 others ill.
The MV Hondius departed from Argentina on April 1, 2026. The first signs of an imminent illness emerged when a 70-year old passenger became ill 6 days into the voyage and eventually died on board. Days later, the victim’s wife also fell ill and died as well. As more passengers fell ill, another woman is noted to have died by May 2. A person hospitalized in South Africa was the first confirmed case of hantavirus.
As more people, approximately 30, were evacuated from the ship, some to hospitals, tests on the hospitalized and dead victims confirmed more cases of hantavirus. The World Health Organization declared an outbreak was occurring on board. An attempt to dock in Cape Verde on May 5 was halted by local officials, though medical help was sent on board.
Currently, the Spanish government announced that they would allow the ship to dock in Tenerife while taking necessary precautions. Officials in Cape Verde allegedly attempted to get into contact with officials in Tenerife, warning of the danger behind allowing them to dock. It is expected that the ship will dock on May 10.
In the United States, at least five states are monitoring passengers who may have been exposed to the deadly virus. As of now, officials in Georgia, Texas, Virginia, Arizona, and California have confirmed none of the people at risk are experiencing any symptoms.
Hantavirus is a serious illness, one that, in some cases, has a 40% mortality rate. While usually spread from rodent waste, it is possible that the strain on the MV Hondius is spreading from person to person. It should be noted that this particular strain originates from South America, the continent from which the ship departed.
